Wicca Lessons for Beginners

Greetings, seekers!

Are you looking to learn about the religion of Wicca? Well, you have certainly come to the right place. Please have a seat and join me in a cup of mint tea (doesn’t it smell wonderful?). Let’s talk.

In the many years — well, decades now — that I have been Wiccan, the seekers like yourself just keep flowing in. At first the internet and the explosion of Wicca books on bookstore shelves was a boon– and then it got to the point at which the bad, poorly written information outweighed the good. There are schools, some good and some bad, but why should you be charged to learn about your own religion?

I’ve been writing on Hubpages for about three years at this point, and I’ve written quite a number of articles on Wicca, mostly aimed at helping the Beginner. Some of them are for people who know absolutely nothing about Wicca whatsoever, and others are for people who may have been self-studies for a while and read a few books but are still learning about how to put it all into practice.

To make things easy for you, I created this directory of all my articles on the Wiccan religion.

Introduction to Wicca – Just the Facts, Ma’am

When you’re learning about a new religion, particularly one you plan to practice, it’s important to cover the basics. Wicca is a bit foreign to most people because it’s completely different from the more prevalent Abrahamic religions. There are a lot of different words and concepts that are important to grasp, and once you do you may need guidance to help you find your way on your new path. The articles below will help you start your new path on the right foot, but first allow me to announce:

Wiccan Tools and Altars

Wicca is a ceremonial religion. We value ritual. The tools, the symbols, the gestures and actions– they all have meaning behind them that help tap the subconscious and promote a spiritual consciousness. We use these things to keep in a state of mind conducive to worshiping our Gods and connecting to the web of life.

Here are some articles to help you get started on formal practice.

This is amazing! Thank you so much! A couple days ago, I was trying to look through your hubs. I just didn’t know where to start. This definitely helps! I know I have been interested in Wicca for no more than a few months, but I feel an overwhelming connection to it. The more information I learn, the more I love it. I have always considered myself a spiritual person who believed there was a higher power, but I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t feel like I fit in with any religion or spiritual path. I felt like I wasn’t accepted anywhere until I started learning about Wicca. Your hubs have helped me so much already. I can’t wait to learn more! 🙂

Gracep, thanks so much. That’s exactly why I made a directory, I was afraid people would look at that long list of articles and not know where to start. I felt the same way when I came across Wicca so many years ago– I had been searching and something about it clicked with me right away. Thanks for your comment, happy reading and have a Blessed Beltane~

Hi,

I was raised in a Christian home however my parents never taught me that that was the only way of life. They told me to be who I was and wanted to be. I was told to find myself as I grew up. I’m now 18 and every time I step into a church I feel judge. For a religion that preaches no judgment lest the be judged they sure do a lot of it.

I’d love to learn more and be able to ask some questions that your pages don’t answer. Could you please shot me an email at twilightfan5559@yahoo.com ?? It would be very appreciated. Thank you.

I have recently become very interested in wicca, I’ve read a couple things about what wicca is about and I honestly feel like this religion is for me, thank you for helping me to understand it more. Now I do have a question and it may seem dumb, but I’ve seen it a couple times I’ve read that “one cannot become wiccan you must be born one” is this true?

Mel92114 24 months ago

Hello Sage! I cannot tell you how awesome this is that you’ve put this info in one basket. I’ve been reading your work for quite awhile (I was here on HubPages before under a different username) and I can’t tell you how helpful you’ve been on my spiritual path. You are a natural teacher and I’m delighted to have found you!

I’ve been making my way through your articles and you bet I’ll continue doing so. Such valuable and helpful information in one spot is fantastic…I’m so grateful to you. Many thanks and blessings to you!

WiccanSage 23 months ago Author

Hi SylinaLarriva; thanks for your comment, sorry so long in getting back to your question. The answer is, no. You can’t be ‘born’ a Wiccan any more than you’re born Christian or Hindu. Children aren’t born with religions and religions aren’t genetic. You become Wiccan like you can become any other religion– you learn about it, you decide if it’s right for you, and you make a choice. Good luck on your path!

WiccanSage 23 months ago Author

Thanks Mel, and I appreciate your comments. I’m thrilled that you’re finding the info here useful, this writing project is my personal ‘baby’ since it’s a topic so near and dear to my heart. Thanks so much for letting me know that it’s been helpful!

Try looking for ‘piece work’ books like books on meditation, energy work, divination, folk magic, candle magic, etc. I’m afraid the majority of books on Witchcraft cater to the Wiccan-leaning Pagans.

Thanks so much for making this Hub. I’ve been on my ‘year and a day’ for the past five years. Resources and credible, good information is so hard to come by for me, so having this easily accessible makes life so much easier. Hope to see more!

I really don’t have a comment , but a question . How should I pray to my deities ? I have seen prayers online for special occasions, but I haven’t found out how to pray everyday prayers . I am new to Wicca and I am in the research stage . I also am having difficulty finding resources for information that I need to decide what I want my gods and goddesses to be . I can’t find anything on Wicca in my local library . I live in a small town in south Georgia . I have only heard of one other person who claims to be a witch and I’m not sure if they are Wiccan, as anything not christian based is not talked about . I was raised in a somewhat “christian” home . I have tried many times to be a christian as an adult , but I mostly was dissatisfied with the teachings of any of the the churches that I have attended and I read the Bible and I cannot accept the way females are looked down upon in traditional Christianity .Anyway , I feel that so far what I have found out about Wicca I believe that I have found what I have been seeking. I just can’t find the information I need to further my education on Wicca . I really enjoyed your lessons and I hope that I am able to find out more online . Thanks .

I’ve also been wondering about that because I’ve started studying I also study history of Wicca alil to help understand some things better I’ve got a diary to report to of my progress and I can keep track of what I’m getting and well not getting that’s one of my questions as well about praying since I pretty much see the Goddess is everywhere agreeable point on whatever I’m reading and seeing can u pray to her anywhere like in Christianity? or do u have to open a circle sry I haven’t gotten to the whole circle part in my book yet I’m still learning basics of Wicca atm but I’m reading all the time trying to learn more to see if this is for me

Kassie Williams 20 months ago

Hey! I’m a new student that just decided that it’s time to actually learn about the relgion I’ve been rather interested about. I feel like your site might be very very helpful for me

William 20 months ago

Hi Sage! I found the Wicca way just a few days ago, actually, completely by accident, too, and it immediately had a sort of connection with me – I was and still am being raised in a primarily Christian family, and although the religion never really settled with me, I never actively sought out another. I’d found Shamanism a year before, and I like it and respect it, but again it just doesn’t settle the way this does. I need a teacher, someone to guide me in the Wiccan way, because this, I feel, is who I am. Could you be that person? I’ve been looking up things about Wiccan (is it Wiccanism or just Wiccan?) and I have hundreds of questions, and it’s all just so much . . . . I feel like I’m rambling on. Thank you for this article! You can be sure that I will be coming back and reading as much as I can. I look forward to your teachings!

Blessed be

(Learned that from the Internet!) (:

Well this was great. I’m not really into Wicca full-on myself but it’s cool that you took all of your writings (or most) and compressed them into one, easy to follow introductory article that led readers off to other articles to help them learn whatever it is they’re interested in.

I am a teen and this helped me immensely..

I looked at some other sites but none of them helped me.

My Grandmother is the one who got me interested.

He sent me a book about wiccan history.

But I had no idea that there wiccas even existed in the 21st century!

Thank you so much. =)

I’ve been interested in Wicca for so long, and have read some books here and there. Only recently did I really start to embrace it. Your directory has really helped clarify a lot for me. I’m about halfway through reading all of your articles. Thank you for taking the time to do this!

WiccanSage 20 months ago Author

Hi Rhonda; sorry took so long to respond but I’ve been dealing with family matters and have not been very active here for a few months.

When I pray, it can be very informal or formal. Throughout the day, I just pray (talking in my head– like “Dear Goddess, please give me patience to deal with these kids today before they drive me nuts.”). I don’t stop to light candles or burn incense– I just talk to my Gods.

Then there are the more formal moments of prayers/devotions, this might be reciting prayer at my shrine every morning or said during an Esbat ritual.

As for finding your Gods– this is something I’ve written a hub about if you care to check it out: http://wiccansage.hubpages.com/hub/Wicca-for-Begin… The way I see it, the best way is to reach out to deity and see who answers the call. It also should entail a lot of research, soul-searching, meditation and prayer. For some it happens quickly, for others it takes much time. There’s no ‘one way’, as it’s a very personal journey. I hope that article might clear up any questions you may have, if not please post questions in the comment section and I’ll answer as best I can.

WiccanSage 20 months ago Author

Hi SFIAO; I don’t believe a formal rite of creating a circle is necessary for a simple prayer.

Since you are more familiar with Christianity, think of it like this: Christians go to church for formal prayers, just as Wiccans hold rituals for formal prayers. HOwever, Christians pray to their God informally every day as well, just talking to him in their mind many times; Wiccans will do with their Gods and Goddesses as well.

While formal rituals can be a beautiful and spiritually moving way of worship, they are not required to simply commune with deity. Hope that clears it up a bit for you!

Hi William, glad to meet you, and Bright Blessings to you on your new path.

I don’t take on private students over the internet, but the articles I write are with the intent to guide beginners in any areas they might find confusing. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have on any of my articles.

I also started a blog last year but family issues forced me to give up a lot of internet activities. Still, the entries there might be helpful to you and now that I think about it I really want to take up writing it again now that things are settling down here. You can find it here: http://wiccansage.blogspot.com/

I actually have a question and I’m hoping I don’t sound insane. I’m at the point in my studies where it talks about psychic abilities and how best to develop them and I’m alil curious about this empathy thing they keep mentioning in the books I’m looking at they talk about an empath can sense others emotions easily and I’m wondering if that’s an actual real ability. I mainly ask because when one of my friends is hurting emotionally and they share it with me I suddenly get depressed and feel like I’m feeling their pain with them. Also when I’m around some people that are the mean type the kind that take joy in hurting others (luckily I’m not around them too often but you can’t pick family) I always feel disgusted and sick to my stomach even if they have masks on to the rest of the world and only a few people know who they truly are. I can just always tell when I’m being lied to not over the internet or anything but if I’m on the phone or face to face and they tell me a lie I can just tell I’m not always right but I tend to get it right a lot more then I get it wrong. Also when I’m in big crowds I get overwhelmed and anxious get mild panic attacks I literally can’t be around more then maybe 10 people at once like family holidays together or something but if it’s strangers if there’s more then 5 ppl then I can’t handle it and don’t get me started on doctor’s offices I’m going there for a checkup nothing really wrong with me or getting a refill on allergy meds or something and I’ll always suddenly start feeling drained and shaky and weak sorta idk how to fully explain it. Also my emotions can change quickly like one minute I’m good then the next I feel really down like a rollarcoaster. I can also emulate others so to speak if I hang around somebody for long periods of time even if I can’t stand their behavior like they are annoying or whatever I end up acting like them without even realizing it till somebody points it out to me. Also I constantly feel like I have to always be there to help everybody around me like if they are going through something I literally feel like if I don’t help them I’m a horrible person and I feel like I feel the ups and downs with them like my friend was in an abusive marriage and finally got away while I talked with her I could feel her pain and the feeling of being torn by loving her husband but being afraid of him cause he hit her and then when something good would happen the pain was just gone and instantly I was like this woman who just gave birth to a baby tired and exhausted but happy and relieved by the outcome so to say. I know all this sounds insane and maybe all this is just me but is this empath thing real? and if it is does it sound like I’m one or am I just too empathic for my own good? Please no calling me crazy ppl it’s not nice.

LindaSarhan 18 months ago

This is an amazing Hub packed full of information for those searching. My only thing is the Christian Wicca comments. I actually know Nancy Chandler personally (she wrote the book Christian Wicca: The Trinitarian Tradition) and understand her need to combine the faiths. It may not be for everyone just as there are various different Wiccan paths and traditions, such as Celtic, Dianic, Hecatine, Eclectic, Alexandrian, Gardnerian, and the list goes on. I think it is more about being on your own spiritual path and what resonates with you. Everyone is different and has been placed on varied paths to grow as a spiritual being. Even if Christian Wicca sounds contradictory or doesn’t seem to make any sense at all to some, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for others. We each find power in different places. Respect, Light, and Love.

On a funny note, it was rather funny on some of the Christian Wicca message boards to see people argue with Nancy, not realizing it was her, telling her that she didn’t know what she was talking about and so on. Then trying to “teach” her Christian Wicca, missing her point entirely.

WiccanSage 18 months ago Author

Hi there SFIAO; No, you don’t sound insane at all. A lot of empaths (and yes, you do sound like a talented empath) will go through this. Let’s go through this slowly.

Okay, empathy. By it’s basic mundane definition, empathy is our ability to identify with other people’s thoughts and feelings. This is something we all learn in childhood (in fact, one of the definitions of a sociopath is that they lack empathy). This is absolutely natural, and necessary for us to be a social species.

A step beyond that is psychic empathy, which is when you pick up more than normal signals and cues from others. You don’t even have to be looking at the person, or know they’re there. It’s like they send out a signal that you pick up just by being in proximity.

When someone has heightened psychic empathy, it’s important to learn how to control it. If not, you get exactly what you’ve been getting– you pick it up from everywhere and it starts to drive you nuts, make you sick, run you down, stress you out. This is not you being crazy– this is you being bombarded with everyone else’s emotions. It can be a lot to handle.

There is no ‘too empathic for your own good’, it’s all about learning to control and handle your gifts and abilities– if you have it, you can learn to control it.

Until then, here are some things you can do:

– Meditation will help, so make sure you stay on a routine. Learn to ground & center.

– cleanse yourself periodically, either by smudging or by bathing with salt water; this will help get rid of excess clingy energy.

– Meditate and make sure your heart chakra in particular is healthy, unblocked, aligned properly, etc. And for those times when you are overwhelmed, go into meditation and CLOSE it (you can actually find a lot of chakra guided meditations on youtube).

– get an apache tear stone (it’s a type of obsidian) on a chain, and wear it so that it falls about heart level ideally. If you can’t do that, just carry it. They are inexpensive, but very effective in helping you block and reflect emotional energy.

– Learn to differentiate between your own feelings, and what you are picking up from others, so you can learn how to ‘compartmentalize’ it and separate it.

Let me know if any of that helps, or if you have any other questions or concerns, okay? Don’t worry– you will be fine, you can handle this.

SFIAOgirl021 18 months ago

Thanks so much for all the advice I’ve been dealing with this for a long time and I never understood it till I read about it in these books and I’m glad to know I’m not as insane as I thought cause I was beginning to worry lol but again thanks thanks thanks so much for ur advice I’ve got a few ebooks on chakras and auras and related things I’ll give them a read to see if I can get better at the meditating grounding and shielding and I’ll see about getting that stone as soon as I can I’m sure it’ll help

WiccanSage 18 months ago Author

Thanks Linda; I’m not sure if you read, or how much you read, about my article on Christian Wicca, but I specifically say in it that I’m not criticizing anyone’s beliefs. I have no problem with her path. If she feels the need to combine stuff from Wicca and Christianity, she’s got as much rights as anyone to do so.

My only complaint is when people claim to be practicing two religions at once (particularly two that conflict so much); it’s dishonest to call it something it’s not, because essentially what you end up having to do is cherry pick what you like and dispose of important elements that you don’t feel apply to you. This is especially true with minority religions like Wicca, because it only serves to confuse everyone further about it.

I’m familiar with Chandler’s background & beliefs, and don’t deny her experience and knowledge about Wicca. I understand she used “Christian” originally as a modifier. Even she admits, though, that “Christian Wicca” isn’t actually Christianity; Yet this is exactly what is communicated by the name of the religion. And a lot of other people do not use it as a modifier; they actually believe that they are Wiccan and Christian simultaneously, usually (as I stated) because they think all there is to Wicca is doing magic or loving nature.

I have no beef at all with her personal beliefs; I still disagree in theory– I believe deities should be worshiped on their own terms, and bringing YHWH or Jesus into a Wiccan circle to me seems ultimately disrespectful. I wouldn’t do it. But I’ll let Wiccans who want to bring them in there sort it out with them, I’m not going to judge them on that.

As far as Chandler’s path is concerned, I just think she should have come up with a better term for it, because it’s highly contradictory to call something ‘Christian Wicca’ while also saying it’s not really Christian. The name implies it is… it was poorly named from the get-go, and has served to bring more confusion than was necessary (as you even pointed out, with the grief she gets from people on message boards trying to explain ‘Christian Wicca’ to her, and now it seems like a major effort trying to qualify the name with explanations).

Thank you for your comments, though. I believe we can still have respect, light & love even if we have different opinions. Thank you for sharing yours.

Vagabond Laborer 18 months ago

Hi WiccanSage,

This may seem like a naïve question, but why is Wicca sometimes associated with Satanism?

Thanks.

WiccanSage 18 months ago Author

Hi Vagabond; That is a good question, actually. Wiccans certainly don’t associate Wicca with Satanism; and Satanists don’t consider Wiccans Satanists either. The beliefs, tenets, ethics, etc. are simply different.

The people who associate Wicca with Satanism are often Christians who tend to associate everything outside of their particular beliefs with Satanism. This is to me a form of sad paranoia (kind of like white people saying all minorities look the same), but they believe in this Satan being and they believe he is behind a number of things. They also tend to be people who are not interested in learning the facts or seeing a difference between the two different belief systems, so I frankly I don’t worry much about them. They’re entitled to their beliefs.

Other people are simply misinformed, because they got bad information (generally from the people who go around preaching that Wicca is Satanism, or from fiction or something). For them it’s just an honest mistake.

Hope that clears that up for you, thanks!

Vagabond Laborer 18 months ago

Thanks, WiccanSage; that does help.

SFIAOgirl021 18 months ago

I’m reading over ur advice for me again and I have to ask what is smudging? I haven’t come across that term yet in my studies

WiccanSage 18 months ago Author

No problem. Smudge sticks are small bundles of dried incense, like sage, sweetgrass or lavender. You burn one end like incense and the smoke cleanses negativity or energy you don’t want that you may have picked up for others. They sell smudge sticks on amazon & ebay if you’re looking for them. If you prefer you can just burn regular incense. Sage or sandalwood are really good for that particular purpose. Just fan the smoke toward yourself, or put it in an incense burner on the floor and stand over it and let the smoke rise up and wash over you (be careful not to burn yourself or knock it over).

I have read almost all of your hubpage posts! I had downloaded the app (iPhone 4) and read when I wasn’t at home or near my computer. The new iPhone 6, however, is not compatible with it. I am not sure why. That just means I can review more of what you have to say and contemplate more.

I have studied Wicca since I was 14. And yes, I even tried to make a YouTube channel (which failed). I stopped doing that when I realized I might not be right even through what I have learned, and since then I have remained just a student. I have taken the year and a day learning to like a seven year process. I just feel that there is no end to learning, and why put something out in the world (like my videos) if I will just prove the opposite later (if it comes to that)?

Your view on this religion has helped me realize I was looking in the wrong place for my research. I would always head straight to the Wicca Section of the bookstore and grab the books that I felt had real meaning. Turns out most of it is hogwash. Unfortunate for me, but at least now I can read the facts and turn around and say I know what is real! Not all books on shelves are facts, even when they claim to be. Sometimes, you have to leave your comfort zone and read other material to find the hidden truths.

I have been learning by myself for these past seven years, and I am happy to find someone like you who is actually interested in helping the future generations learn, without being questionable. You have a good heart.

Thank you again for enlightening me, and I really hope I can take your class that will be starting soon! I would love to learn what you have to teach.

Blessed Be! )O(

Bryn 16 months ago

Hey, my name is Alexis. I go by Bryn in most online communities though…I’ve been researching this on and off for months, and all your articles on here have been the most helpful resource yet. I’m only 16, and I have a Catholic in my household, but everybody’s pretty open, so it’s not a bad way to go. I’m scared people won’t take me seriously when I say that this is the path that I want to be on, and that it speaks to me in ways I can’t describe.

Actually, I find it a little funny that you use the Christian God’s actual holy name in your articles. When I went to a Lutheran private school, they said it was forbidden and only the angels could use his name or whatever. I never got that bit… My dad got really mad with my school because when I was young(er) I had really bad nightmares about the devil and being dragged down to Hell.

I’m getting off topic. Anyway, I was wondering if you could write an article on invocations, some examples, how to structure one if I wanted to write my own, or direct me to one if possible. I would really appreciate any tips you could give me.

Thanks so much!

WiccanSage 16 months ago Author

Hi Brooke… I don’t know what to say, I’m really flattered. There’s a lot of good teachers and authors on Wicca, despite the fact that there are also a lot of bad ones. The more you read the more you learn to separate the facts from the fiction.

I was lucky, I stumbled upon some great teachers who were able to help me be more discerning. They taught me about Wicca for free, and so I pay that forward by teaching others.

I’m glad you’re finding my hubs useful and am glad to hear you’re considering the Wiccan Way Grove and I look forward to talking to hearing from you this summer.

WiccanSage 16 months ago Author

Hi Bryn, I’m so glad you’re finding my hubs helpful.

I know what you mean about using the term YHWH; I just find it easier than always writing ‘the Christian God’ or ‘the Judeo-Christian God’ or the ‘Abrahamic God’. I figure when I’m talking about other specific Gods (Osiris, Apollo, Thor, etc.) I use their name. For clarity’s sake, it just seems to make sense to use YHWH’s name.

Sounds like a great idea for an article, and I will definitely get to work on it soon. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is fascinating, Sage! I’ve been mildly interested Wicca ever since I read a magical realism book that utilized Wicca as a theme. Actually, I’m in a strange place. I identify as generically “pagan,” because I believe in the old ways of respect and careful husbandry of Mother Nature and her resources, and the saying of “Do as ye will, nay harm ye none,” rings true for me. That said, I am also atheist; I don’t believe in either deities or demons, so I don’t suppose Wicca is a good fit, for me either.

I am studying Tarot, and the power of the Universe and positive manifestation, but without mention of a deity. I’ve done some rituals, but again, they are generic in nature.

What say you? I feel I am a “lone wolf,” out of step with everyone and everything. 😉

WiccanSage 16 months ago Author

Hi MsLizzy! Glad to hear from you. I think a lot of Pagans are ‘solitary eclectic’ who march to the beat of their own drum rather than following any religion in particular. In my own Pagan family we have loads of diversity, from me being initiated into a Wiccan trad and very religious to ‘spiritual but not religious’ atheist Pagan to ‘agnostic non-practicing Pagan’. I wouldn’t worry about labels so much– if you identify with the Pagan community and Pagan spirituality, I would say your are Pagan. But a lot of Pagans don’t follow a specific religion, and are merely spiritual people forging their own path and borrowing what works for them.

DzyMsLizzy 16 months ago from Oakley, CA

“Solitary eclectic.” I like that. That fits, although, I don’t particularly like labels, either. I do, however, when asked about religion in such places as hospital admissions desks, I simply answer , “pagan.” 😉 I have not done rituals from books or online; I invent my own. 😉 It believe it is more meaningful when so personalized.

Thanks for your reply.

I’m fairly new to Wicca, I’ve been studying many many books since the winter. When I first discovered Wicca, I told my mom about it, because she is very open and natural. I now consider myself to be Wiccan, as I have done lots of research, and know that this is the path for me. I’m terrified about what my dad will do though. My dad is pretty traditional, although not religious, and my stepmom is Catholic. The have made mentions before about Wicca being evil. What should I do about them?

WiccanSage 14 months ago Author

Hi Charlotte. Glad to hear you’ve found your path, and that your mom is accepting. It’s great to be able to share that with people we love.

As for your dad & stepmom, that is a tough place to be in. I can tell you when I first walked this path I thought I could win my mother over by conversations, arguing, trying to explain and justify myself– as if I had faith that if I hit on the right combination of words, I could make her see all the things in Wicca I saw, and show her the err of her ways. But I learned it doesn’t work that way. You can’t really force people to change the way they think about it. In fact, people have a tendency to dig in their heels even deeper when you try to change their mind about something. It’s human nature.

If/when they decide to be open minded and more accepting, that can only happen on their own terms. No amount of arguing or trying to make your case is going to work. So if/when you choose to tell them, keep that in mind. It’s natural to want the approval of the people we love, but it’s a good lesson to remember that we don’t *need* it, and we’re not always going to get it. And the sooner we accept that, the better off we are. If you’re confident in your own convictions and experiences, you won’t need that external validation as much… you’ll just want others to respect your rights to leave you to follow your own path.

After 2 years of arguing with my mother, I finally learned that, gave up… I refused to talk or argue religion. And a few years after that she finally began to accept it because she saw all the things she feared would happen to me (all the dark, evil stuff she expected) did not actually happen, and in fact she saw a lot of improvements- I was getting my life in order in a positive way and a happier person. So she just backed off and it became a non-issue. If I had never stopped it from being a power struggle, and never given her that space to figure it out for herself, she and I probably would have still been fighting over it.

Now I had the benefit in that I was already an adult in my 20s, and was not living in her house. I was self-supporting. So if she didn’t approve, it only meant being frustrated when I was around her. I could then go home and follow my beliefs without concern. So that does make it easier… I didn’t need permission for anything, and I didn’t have any obligations a minor has to a parent.

When you’re a minor, or even an adult living (or staying) in someone’s house, they should be respected. If they think Wicca is evil, don’t perform rituals in their home. If you’re a minor and your father says don’t read Wiccan books while you’re there, then don’t bring those books. I would not disrespect their beliefs, their God, their religion or practices. If they did want you to go to church, then go, and sit politely. If they wanted to say grace, bow your head and listen. Be polite at their holidays, etc.

At the same time they have parental rights, you have human rights. No matter what age, is that of your own personal thoughts and beliefs. Your relationship with your Gods, your world view, etc., are personal and not something any parent or authority figure can control, and not something you even really need to discuss with anyone until you feel ready to do so– if ever. There’s nothing wrong with keeping your private thoughts private, and there is no point in throwing things out there with family when you know it will cause nothing but strife. So think long and hard before you decide to open up that can of worms, and have a good reason. If you think it would cause strife, you don’t need to talk about it.

The good thing is that you do have your mom if you really do need a parent to talk to about it.

If you do decide to tell your dad & stepmom, then have a plan of how you are going to handle it. And as I said before, the way I recommend is by not getting defensive, argumentative, or pleasing your case, but to just assert what ever needs to be said, and keep the rest private and away from them. Obey any rules about what to do/how to behave, but any internal processes are personal and nothing they can really do anything about.

Hope that makes sense hon, I wish you much luck.

Thank you so much for writing these articles, they helped me so much! I’ve always felt very connected with the earth and nature (I was also born on Earth Day) but I didn’t know a religion as great as Wicca existed. When I found out about it I was overwhelmed, I felt like this is the way I want to lead my life but I didn’t know where to start. I almost give up my research because I couldn’t find any good information but when I found your articles I was so happy and I can’t thank you enough for writing them!! They answered lots of my questions and helped me get started but before I came here I read something about ‘familiars’, could you please explain to me what they are? Thanks in advance and thank you for writing these fantastic articles!!!

Hi Nikita; thanks for commenting. It can be overwhelming learning about a new religion, especially when it’s built on an entirely different paradigm than the ones you may have previously known. I’m glad you’re finding my articles helpful, thanks so much and best of luck!

Hello, I’m very, very new to Wicca and am really looking for some guidance. I was only able to scan through your stuff here tonight, but I plan to come back tomorrow or the next day to really read it throughly. I really feel like I need a mentor or some kind of teacher, as I find a lot of this slightly confusing!

Hi Ellie; learning a new religion is a big undertaking. Don’t expect it to all fall into place immediately. Just do your research and understanding comes with time. Feel free to ask questions, too. Thanks for your comment, and best of luck on your path! ~Sage

Hi,

Amazing compilation of articles – you’ve been busy!

I just wanted to clarify that the religion of Wicca, while inspired by ancient mythologies, is not itself an ancient religion. It was invented purposely in the 1930s by Alastair Crowley and Gerald Gardner. Which is fine – all religions are human inventions after all and had to start sometime – but I think it is honest and helpful to point it out.

BB,

Tham.

Thank you so much you have been the biggest help for me

Hi Tham; not sure if you read any of my articles, but I have repeatedly said Wicca is a 70 year old religion founded by Gerald Gardner… Crowley founded Thelema, and had nothing to do with Wicca other than the fact that he was a contemporary of Gardner, and Gardner was heavily influenced by Thelema.

Not sure where in my articles you saw something equating Wicca to ancient religions, as this has never been my position.

I appreciate your comments, thanks so much~ Sage

I am very new to Wiccan ways. Just started learning about and have jumped in a bit, as I feel so drawn to it. Recently bought several books and even some ritual tools, though I don’t know how to set up an alter or perform a spell/ritual. Your hub/page is amazing with so many educational links. Honestly, a bit overwhelming but glad I book marked it:) Hope to learn lots more about Wiccan ways so that I can feel more a part of Wiccan life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
